These are the people who would blindly choose the Daytona over the Zenith.Zenith together with Hodinkee unveils the new Zenith Chronomaster Original Limited Edition which is the result of a collaboration between the two brands. People who have entire collections made only of Rolexes. Rolex is one of the few brands that attracts Rolex fans. If you're buying watches to satisfy the third category, that's a personal issue. Those that do comment on my watch generally fall into a few categories, the most common of which being: the random "nice watch" person who couldn't spot a Rolex if you beat them with it the watch enthusiast, in which case it's likely they're familiar with the brand I'm wearing and tools who only care about major brands like Rolex. Most importantly, it took owning a Rolex to understand that people generally don't care about what watch I'm wearing. The only reason I can say this now is because I've owned multiple Rolex watches and got over the need to be seen wearing the Daytona over Zenith's "homage" (though it can be argued that Rolex owes Zenith for the Daytona's popularity thanks to the Daytona's automatic movement made by Zenith). However, had you asked me this same question a year ago, I'd have chosen the Daytona for the same reason people ask this question: people are hesitant to buy a watch that looks like a Rolex but isn't because they are concerned with brand image. If you don't care about owning a Rolex, the Zenith is the better watch, technologically speaking. (Tangentially, I think the Sub will get the PCL treatment next.) However, the Zenith wears nicer and can pass off as being more formal versus the Rolex's lipstick-on-a-pig approach of throwing polished center links ("PCL") on their sport watches. I will be honest and say I have way more complaints with Zenith's design choices than I do with the Daytona, and the Daytona's clasp is infinitely better than the Zenith's. The Zenith is the nicer looking watch (subjective) with better movement (objective). I held both in person at the AD this weekend side-by-side (don't get excited, the Rolex was a display model). It's a very attractive watch at a competitive price, however the way your questions gear towards "investment opportunities" dictates that this might not be the watch for you.ĭefinitely. However, do not buy it because you want to flip for profit. It is as good as any Chronograph can get. It's a great watch and a worthy rival to Daytona. Zenith loses out slightly in form factor (thickness) and I heard the bracelet and clasp aren't as comfy but that's about it. Rolex takes pride in "staying true to its cores" as a tool watch company and kept the back outside of view, and as Rolex becomes less of a tool watch company and much, much more of a luxury brand that people chase after, this principle is working against their favor now. The 1/10 sec feature is like a huge slap in the face, the display at the back is absolutely stunning. Zenith CM sport however, has many other things going for it. Without that brand name it might still catch eyes but not like this. Let's face it, Daytona managed to reach legendary status because it's Rolex. /r/WatchExchange for buying, selling, trading watchesīanner photo courtesy of /u/northscylla Please take a look at our community rules and FAQ before contributing!./r/WatchHorology our sister subreddit for horology, watch appreciation, history, technical discussion and related topics.Simple Questions and Recommendations ThreadĬome hang out in the Official /r/Watches Discord!
